Moose Jaw Koseikan club impressive at competition

The competition was indeed tough but that didn'tstop members of the Moose Jaw Koseikan Judo Club from turning in impressive performances.

About 190 competitors from Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, B.C., and Saskatchewan took part in the recent Sask Open Judo Tournament in Regina with Moose Jaw members bringing home a total of nine medals.

"We had some excellent results considering the calibre of the competition," Moose Jaw Judo Club instructor Cliff Wiens said. "A lot of ther others clubs only brought their best we fared very well against them.

"For a lot of our kids this was their first experience at a tournament of this calilbre," he added. "It was a great experience for them."

Jeremy Williams and Brian Smith each managed second place finishes in the Junior Men's Division with Williams competing in the 52-kg. event and Smith in the 90 kg. event.

Mark Kerr was right behind Smith in the 90 kg. event, finishing third; Garth Rivers was fourth in the 53 kg. event and John Smith was fourth in the 60 kg.

Moose Jaw also fared well in the Juvenile Men's Division with Tom Glasrude placing second (81 + kg), Leigh White finishing third (52 kg.), Chris Gerry fifth (46 kg.) and Tyler O'Rourke sixth (46kg.).

In the Senior Women's Division Kailey Large (57 kg) and Stephanie Legault (63 kg.) each won bronze while in the Senior Men's Division Derrick Porter (78 kg) and Smith (90 kg.), trying his luck with an older group, each finished fourth. Marisa Kerr (63 kg.) managed a sixth place finish in the Juvenile Girls Division.

Among those taking part in the Canada games 2003 Division were O'Rourke (second, 46 kg.), Fred Myers (third, 56 kg.), White (fifth. 52 kg.), and Gerry (sixth, 46 kg.).
